During his study years he worked as a night porter at Sheffield Midland Station. In the quiet hours he could be found sketching the engines and the folk waiting to board them.
Though he wanted to paint, it was suggested he get a proper job, so he went on t do a Teaching Diploma. His first post as at Newfield school and then to King Edward VII grammar school, where he became Head of Art. His years of teaching enabled him to have a thorough knowledge of art history and a keen interest in architecture. This formed the base of his works implementing the knowledge, talent and passion for his subject matter. He was fascinated by light and changing weather, capturing a mood and a moment was part of the challenge. looking at the painting 'Terminus' you can almost smell the damp air, the wet overcoat and the stale tabacco from the top deck of the tram. Equally he could capture the still silence of a midday landscape in rural Tuscany. He was a master in watercolour and painted each stroke with such apparent ease. Peter was invited to become a Full Member of the Guild of Railway Artists in 1979. He exhibited in many local and national Exhibitions. |
